SUMMER SENSE

By Jane Kilian, M.D.

Summertime and the living is easy. Or so it should be.

Hopefully this month finds you enjoying all the joys of a Minnesota summer. Here are a few tips to keep you healthy and safe during the summer months.

Remember to wear sunscreen and have your children do the same. It is most important for your kids. We get the majority of our sun exposure in our childhood and adolescent years. It is only much later that the bad sunburns will result in skin cancers, as well as wrinkles and dryness. Select a sunscreen SPF 15 or higher for optimum protection.

If you do get sun burned, plain old white vinegar is a great treatment. Apply it to your skin several times a day following a bad burn. It will reduce the pain, reduce the redness, and help prevent peeling. Liberal and frequent applications of moisturizers help.

During the summer heat, dehydration can be a problem, especially for the young and the elderly. Remember to drink lots of fluids; water or electrolyte enhanced liquids (Gatorade, etc.) are the best. Alcoholic beverages do not count as fluids, as they actually cause more dehydration. If you notice that you are not urinating very much, or that your urine is darker than usual, you need to increase your fluids. Nearly colorless urine is a sign of good hydration. Do outside work during cooler hours in the morning and evening, instead of the afternoon.

Biking, in-line skating, skateboarding, scooter riding, or any other such thing is great for your body. Remember to wear protective gear, especially helmets. One bad tumble could instantly change your life. A head injury can result in personality changes, learning difficulties, speech problems, paralysis, and even death.
