OFF TO COLLEGE

By Dr. John Dickhudt

It seems like only yesterday that your children were starting kindergarten, now many of them will soon be off to college. Just as a kindergarten physical was part of the process, a college physical should be part of the process, whether of not your child's particular college requires a physical. Your family physician will reinforce the same sage advice parents give concerning school and responsible behavior. Plus, we are still available via the phone for medical advice no matter where your child attends school.

This is also a time to update any immunizations and give the college immunization, a meningococcal meningitis immunization. This is the immunization that protects college-aged students against the most deadly type of meningitis that strikes college-aged students. This disease usually presents with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, lethargy, then vomiting and a rash. It can be fatal if not recognized and treated promptly. My son's roommate had that disease his sophomore year, was hospitalized for weeks, and fortunately survived without any residual effects. The immunization only lasts for several years and the best time to receive it is as a college freshman, particularly if your student will be residing in a dormitory. It is a safe vaccine that costs about $100 and is covered by most insurances.
